SharePod is very cool indeed. You can download tracks from your iPod to your PC, maintaining filenames (which are configurable). That means you can make a backup of your iPod.
Personally, I find ripping CDs is a bit hit and miss as far as ID3s are concerned (because CDDB info is usually a bit slack). Now, I can rip CDs, listen to them, and over time get the ID3s sorted out (on the iPod) and then transfer the files back to the PC as a backup and for use at home with SlimServer.

have you tried freedb (uk.freedb.org) for CD tags?i've found the problem is multiple hits not missing entries...
looks handy, i think i *will* have to get an iPod ;)
Yeah,? I use FreeDB with Grip (and then gtkPod). iTunes uses GraceNote. I find that both have pointless Genre info, and frequently stupid artist or album names. iTunes annoys me because compilations usually have the individual track artists in the "artist" field. I suspect that's actually the best way to do it, but it assumes the "composer" has been filled in on all your CDs - most arn't.
So what ever you do, you lose. I've been getting most things about straight and then sticking them on the iPod. gtkPod is *much* better for editing ID3 information that iTunes, so over time I'm getting them straightened out with that.
