Drinkline - not 0207 332 0202

We're getting quite a few calls at work from people looking for Drinkline. It's listed on loads of web sites as being on 0207 332 0202, but alas, that's actually our technical support number. If you're a bank, and you've got problems with your corporate banking software, then call us. Otherwise, you might want to look elsewhere. (Of course, if you're a hot female and single, then get dialling ;-)

Yep. It is 020 for

Yep. It is 020 for London.

See:consumers.ofcom.org.uk/2009/08/phone-numbers.

0207 was the old code for Consett and 0208 was the old code for Bodmin - both pre-1995.

I remember when Consett had the 0207 number

I remember when Consett had the 0207 number, I wonder how many people got confused when this area code changed. It seems strange for a small town like Consett and Stanley to give up its area code to the biggest city in the UK.

London is 020 with an eight digit local number.

** It seems strange for a small town like Consett and Stanley to give up its area code to the biggest city in the UK.

They didn't. In Consett, 0207 plus six digits became 01207 plus six digits.

All area codes 02xx to 09xx had moved to new codes 012xx to 019xx in 1995.

Some years later London adopted 020 plus eight digits. There is no 0207 or 0208 code now.

Currently, eight digit London numbers begin with 3, 7 or 8 only. When numbers beginning '3' are fully allocated then new London numbers will begin 2, 4, 5 or 6. This means it will be hundreds of years before London runs out of numbers again.
