HowCooferCatWorks

The Coofer Cat site is hosted on a server in my kitchen. It's an HP DC7100 shruken desktop, P4 based machine with a SATA disk in it (and 3GB RAM). It's a very quiet machine, mostly thanks to it's variable speed fans and decent case design. There's also a 1TB Netgear ReadyNAS providing all of the on-line disk space.

Internet connectivity is provided by my ADSL broadband connection (currently with Freedom2Surf). I use a Netgear wireless router, which not only dishes the broadband out wirelessly, but also connects by cable to a gigabit switch which has the server and NAS plugged into it.

The actual server runs Redhat Fedora, currently Fedora Core 8, but it gets upgrades every so often as new FC releases come along. In the interim, it gets regular patches and such like via the yum update service.

The web server software is Apache 2. It's got PHP installed, which, in conjunction with a MySQL database is used by Drupal to run the whole site. There are a couple of custom modules installed to do a couple of minor things. There's also a USB bluetooth adaptor that talks to an old Nokia phone to send and receive SMS messages.
