This Land
Submitted by coofercat on Tue, 2004-07-27 10:34My "CEO" (as he likes to call himself - something to do with delusions of grandeur) pointed us at this (sadly, you have to sit through some ads first). I liked Bill Clinton ;-)

The High-Tech Cat
Submitted by coofercat on Thu, 2004-07-22 19:53After seeing The 'Mute spring up, and also after recent problems, I've been looking at replacing the software which makes The Cat work with something else. It's probably going to be Tiki - I just installed it in about 5 minutes. As with all such things, configuration takes a lot longer ;-)
Tiki will make this whole site a whole lot more sophisticated...
<--break-->
The primary features of Tiki I'm looking to use right away are:
- The Blog (obviously!) + comments etc.
- The Wiki (as a sideline to the blog)
- The "online support" feature - you'll be able to chat with me if I'm online!
- Polls (to replace the voting thingamy I've got)
Later, I hope to make use of things like the forums, documentation features and such like to take over the other bits of this site (namely Stuff Extraordinare). It would be nice to have more supporting features around some of those bits (even just comments would be a good start). I seem to get a gentle, steady stream of people visiting those pages, so it's probably time I put in a bit of effort ;-)
I'd also like to get everything available by RSS, and on mobile devices etc etc. Really it's just me trying to use all kinds of trendy technology, but it might make The Cat a bit more accessible (if indeed anyone needs it to be ;-).
There's a whole world of work to do here. Tiki's a bit of a beast to work with - there's a lot to it, because it's such a "one size fits all" product. It's got go-zillions of features and nooks and crannies, but makes a nice site when it's up and running.
I'd like to do some serious Tiki hacking too. In addition to the Knowledge Base addition I started ages ago, I'd like to do some serious work with URL translations so that they're search engine friendly, and so they're people-friendly too. I'm not sure I've got the time, but it'll be fun, I'm sure ;-)
Copy-protected CDs may be Cheaper
Submitted by coofercat on Thu, 2004-07-22 02:50Apparently some copy protected CDs may be sold cheaper than non-protected. This doesn't sound good. However, I'd buy a CP/CD knowing full-well that what ever it had on it was (a) not likely to be Linux-proof, and (b) would be cracked soon enough. I would however, return the CD to the shop if it failed to play in *any* device I own.
As for Steve Jobs saying downloading will replace CDs - sorry mate, the iPod's cool, but CDs (or format replacement) will never be replaced by downloads. I Buy CDs for something else. The permanence is obviously a part of it, but also the inlay, the reply-mail card, and actually holding it in your hand that counts. Don't forget, the 12" isn't dead yet - a vast number of people still love the 12" beyond even the CD. Hence, the CD (and even the 12"!) will be here in 10 years. Don't discount the "worship" aspect of music - that aspect is what's kept the music industry afloat for the last few years (it sure ain't the quality of their music releases!)

Submitted by coofercat on Wed, 2004-07-21 11:19I know it's terribly uncool to like BB, but this series has caught my eye a bit. It's one of the best yet, I'd say (not that I'm an expert mind you)
Last night (meaning Monday night + editing time) saw the first Big Brother shag in the UK house. It's only taken five series to get there. Skillfully arranged under a table, with a table cloth draped over the top, Michelle and Stuart got it on.
Naturally, the two weren't about to do it with their mics on, so BB had to crank up the sensitivity of every mic in the room. You heard the snap of the condom going on (nice). Those long-zoom cameras only managed to get shots of some feet moving about. How long before they get x-ray cameras in the house?
Let's just hope some sex chills Michelle out a bit. She's been a bit psycotic recently. (oh god, I have watched it too much, haven't I?)

Karma/Rating Votes
Submitted by coofercat on Tue, 2004-07-20 01:41I've switched off the Karma/Rating votes on posts - someone/something at customscoop.com (64.49.241.200-64.49.241.214) seems to have found a way to cause a few problems with it. It's not used a great deal, so I've switched it off.
There's nothing I like more than spending my time fixing this stuff :-(
Stuff
Submitted by coofercat on Tue, 2004-07-20 01:04I'd forgotten about The Red Ferret Journal. Lots of good stuff, including UK Modfest 2004, Google Answer's list of free stuff (very odd!), and the Ultimate Taxi (also odd). I was going to link to Windsave, but it's IE only, and flash all over the place, so they don't deserve it.

Bitoogle
Submitted by coofercat on Mon, 2004-07-19 11:59Search the Bit Torrent. Apparently, Bit Torrent's taking over from Kazaa et al.
Sodipodi
Submitted by coofercat on Mon, 2004-07-19 11:55Looks interesting. Probably requires more artistic ability than I'm blessed with though.
Joe Millionaire
Submitted by coofercat on Mon, 2004-07-19 11:33What the hell is this? They've got 12 (very fit) girls from various places (mostly Europe). They then tell them that the guy they're going to meet is called David, and he's a 'real American cowboy'. The silence, screwed up faces, and groaning only stops when they tell them that he's worth about $80 million. Suddenly they're all seeing endless shopping, diamonds and sitting by the pool.
Keep these people away from me.
(the minor good news is that of course, David's actually worth about $8, and he really is the redneck yank they thought of when they heard "cowboy").
